January Wine Club

Lexington:

Nadi Riesling

Pale-intensity lemon in color, + super aromatic, this riesling has a nose of honeysuckle, lemon citrus, pear, pineapple and apricot. On the palate the dry, medium-bodied wine echoes flavors on the nose supported by high acidity that lifts the wine through to a long finish. Standout from the Mosel region in which 2015 was an outstanding vintage.

Roca Andina Malbec

This Argentinian Malbec is an inky, medium-bodied, dry red wine with strong impressions of dark fruits on the nose and palate. It’s rich + intense with soft tannins, a fruit forward nose, and round finish.

Duxoup Sangiovese

The classic + quintessential Sangiovese perfume – cherries, Italian herbs, cranberry, red currant, spice, along with a juicy, fleshy, and lively body. The palate is cool-fruited, vibrant, with good acidity and tannin – but it has also eased sweetly into its maturity. A hidden gem from Cali that harkens to old brunellos of yesteryear.

Le Mistral Tier

Vigna del Lauro, Friuli Cabernet Franc

Bright cherry red. Lifted perfume of violets, lavender & allspice spice intertwined with gamey, briary red, black cherry fruits + tomato leaf. Beautiful natural balance.

Josmeyer Riesling Le Kottabe 2016

40-year-old vines of Riesling from Herrenweg de Turckheim plots. Situated on the alluvial fan of the Fecht river, this terroir is characterized by colluvial deposits of gravel-sand substrate, alluvium, and stones. Similar to the soil of Graves, this terroir produces aromatic, mature, and elegant wines. This dry and well-balanced Riesling opens on citrus notes. It has a lively attack and good structure on the palate, leading into a long and lemony finish.

E. Guigal Chateaunuef-Du-Pape Blanc

While hints of apple and nut are demure on the nose, this unctuous, full-bodied white offers an abundance of white grapefruit and lemon flavors. It's an elegant, mouth-clinging sip marked by savory tones of smoke and crushed minerals. The blend includes 45% Grenache Blanc, 25% Roussanne, 15% Clairette, 10% Bourboulenc, 3% Piquepoul and 2% Picardan. An outstanding wine from an iconic producer.

Louisville:

Bora Tier

Domaine Benjamin Taillandier Laguzelle

Benjamin Taillandier Laguzelle is a red natural wine from Languedoc, France, made from Cinsault, Syrah, and Carignan grapes harvested by hand. This low intervention wine hits all the points: cold maceration, natural yeast, aged 6 months in stainless steel, unfined, unfiltered, vegan, very low sulfites, and biodynamic. The wine is savory with notes of garrigue - Mediterranean bushes characteristic of the area. Medium-bodied but very easy to drink and relatively low in alcohol content. Refreshing mouthfeel.

Food Pairing:

Braised Beef & Noodles. There seems to be some discrepancy as to serving it with mashed potatoes or not, but I'll leave that up to your double carb tendencies!

Filipa Pato Bairrada 'Dinamica' Branco 2021

Filipa Pato and William Wouters is a magical wife and husband collaboration.

Their philosophy is simple: create authentic wines without make-up, they express the true nature of the vineyards from which they come.Using the indigenous grapes of Bical and Arinto, this white shines through with notes of pear, herbaceous spiciness and a nice amount of salinity. The finish has a beautiful amount of acidity to keep you coming back for more.

Food Pairing:

Winter salad, we are thinking roasted sweet potatoes, beets, cashews, preserved lemon vinaigrette over a bed of baby kale and spinach.

Food Pairing: Fennel sausage and mushroom rigatoni-Peek the recipe and the cookbook from Joshua McFadden at The Breeze.

Le Mistral Tier

Lammidia Abruzzo Amfora Rosso

Davide Gentile and Marco Giuliani were childhood friends in Abruzzo, then lost touch. When they found each other again after university, it was with a shared passion for wine, so they decided to try their hands at making it together. Since the beginning of their project, they’ve approached it with a love of both natural winemaking and avid experimentation. They’ve never trained at a formal wine academy, and they don’t rely on agronomists or oenologists. They have learned by trial and error in the vineyards and cellars. In fact, their first fermentation in 2010 was such a disaster that they called in an expert grandma, virtuosa at getting rid of the evil eye, to perform a ritual over their grapes. Apparently it worked, and Lammidia (“evil eye” in Abruzzese dialect) was born.

This natural wine is destemmed, unfined, unfiltered, has no added SO2, hand-harvested, and biodynamic. It also boasts aging in amphora to pick up rustic clay and mineral notes.

Sour cherry-barnyard kombucha with tart dark fruit characteristics on the palate. Secondary notes of smoke and leather keep you sipping. Lower tannin levels with wild acidity.

Food Pairing: While wood-fired pizza is a classic pairing with Montepulciano, you could go the snack route, and pick up some high quality pecorino cheese from the same region in Italy. Made of sheep's milk, pecorino is typically aged 5-8 months and is salty, tangy and slightly spicy.

Stolpman Vineyards Estate Syrah

Over 20 years ago, our Founding Partner, Tom Stolpman, discovered what we believe to be one of the greatest viticultural sites on earth. Hidden in the hills of California’s Central Coast, on a rare Limestone outcropping & unobstructed from the Pacific Ocean wind, this unique land is naturally suited to grow Syrah and Roussanne grapes. We are committed to preserving this natural environment for our vines through conscious farming, dry farming, & sustainable employment. In the winery, we prefer native fermentation & minimal manipulation.

Food Pairing: Slow roasted pork tenderloin or porchetta sandwiches with a schmear of Sabatino black truffle spread.

Meinklang Blaufrankisch

Meinklang is an original, family-run mixed farm, set in the middle of the World Heritage Site of the National Park Neusiedlersee, on the Eastern side of the Neusiedlersee Lake, bordering directly on the Hungarian lowlands, where life’s diversity and complexity are celebrated. This farm functions much like an organism, relying not only on the people but also on the local herd of cows which contributes in an essential way with their natural and invaluable fertiliser. The farm’s diversity is enriched by ancient grains such as spelt, farro and Einkorn wheat, as well as the fruit orchards and vegetable gardens, meadows of wild herbs and flowers and the elegant charm of the grapevines. You will always find a selection of Meinklang's wines at The Breeze.

Meinklang's Blaufränkisch is a friendly, natural red wine, just what you would expect from a Blaufränkisch. It's elegant, balanced and fruity with nice flavors of forest fruits, plum, blackberry and cassis, with a smidge of peppercorn. Low in both acidity and tannins.

Food Pairing: Have a few friends over and make a hearty German/Austrian style winter meal. We are thinking bratwurst, lots of stoneground mustard, spaetzle, braised red cabbage.
